The Best Foam Roller for Back Pain

Need a Foam Roller

Sharing is caring!

Whether you spend your time working at a computer desk or shoveling out heavy chunks of dirt out of the ground, your back is constantly being engaged. Foam rollers are a great tool for relieving upper and lower back pain.

It is important to note that a foam roller should never be used directly on the lower back. It is fine to use a foam roller on the upper back, glutes, and hip flexors to alleviate lower back pain. Tightness in those surrounding areas is often the culprit of lower back pain.

We have spent days assessing and organizing the top three foam rollers for back pain. By the end of this article, you should know which foam roller is right for you and be on your way to a better, healthier, more confident you.

Keep in mind that we evaluated each Roller for Back Pain based on 4 criteria:

1. Structure and design

2. Comfort

3. Durability

4. Value

If you know what you’re looking for already skip through our handy-dandy table of contents:

#1 RumbleRoller – Textured Muscle Foam Roller (Best Overall)

Any of the foam rollers in this article are bound to give you more results than someone walking on your back- but this particular company goes as far as to say that using their product is similar to getting a soft-tissue massage from a private therapist.

This model is both firm and comfortable. It is worth noting that for lower back pain, you will definitely want at least the medium size foam roller.

You also have the option of normal vs firm and most people found that firmer version is better and digs deeper into the connective tissue and fascia for better results. What this does is help circulate oxygen and blood to the problem area for optimal pain relief and faster muscle recovery.

The Rumble Roller is durable, waterproof and latex-free.

However, it is in the medium-higher price range but, from what we can tell, it is worth every penny. And if you use it properly you may be walking around like a hula-dancer afterward.

What people are saying:

This product has great customer feedback, especially considering the volume of the purchase. Almost all of the reviews were positive people, relieved from stressful pain. One of the only negative things some people found was the overall comfort while rolling. They said it really dug into their back.

As we mentioned earlier, you should never apply direct force to your lower-back; but for the other areas, keep in mind that we are talking about digging into muscle and soft tissue using gravity and your body weight. As someone who has used various foam rollers, I can tell you that, even when done properly, there is always a bit of pain before pleasure.

Verdict: If you are looking for the “best one out there” and are not too concerned about price, this one is for you.

#2 PowerPro 2-in-1 Foam Rollers (Best Value)

Everyone loves “Buy one get one free” but this is on a different level. You get both a regular foam roller and a grid-textured foam roller.

You may be asking: “what’s the difference?”

The main difference between a normal smooth foam roller and a grid/textured foam roller is that a grid/texture foam roller gets into the creases and crevasses of soft tissue, making the experience more intense; while the regular smooth foam roller helps to ease your tissue into conformity. The point is, depending on your specific case, you may end up needing both.

Some are skeptical regarding the outer shell, but it has thus far been proven to be very durable and effective against back pain.

It is lightweight- for those who want to take it on the go. It also comes in three different colors. The 24” is the perfect size to attack those lower-back pain points.

What people are saying:

Ratings for this foam roller were very high. The majority have stated that they are walking taller and have better posture thanks to this. Others feel like the inner foam roller may be too soft to really target their needs.

One thing to keep in mind is that this foam roller also comes with a one-year manufacturer warranty- which we like because it makes you at peace when it comes time to click “confirm and pay.”

Verdict: If you are looking for high-quality and to get the most out of your money you can’t go wrong with this foam roller. Just keep in mind that the larger version is ideal for your glutes and hip flexors which consequently is better for your lower back.

3.AmazonBasics Round Foam Roller (Best for Budget)

This is one of the few times we whole-heartedly agree with Amazon’s pick for a foam roller.

One of the coolest things about this foam roller is the fact that you can customize your design with a wide variety of unique colors.

While this one doesn’t offer the same features as far as that massage texture, it is a good beginner foam roll and still delivers great results. Sometimes it is surprising, even for us, to see how you can get quality products at such a low cost online.

Lower back (lumbar) pain can be tackled easily with a 24″ foam roller. A lengthier foam roller is ideal for people who are having other issues such as quad or hamstring pain. If that is you, you may want to consider the 36”- especially because the price is not too far off.

This foam roller is solid all the way through for maximum strength as well as lightweight for mobility.

What people are saying:

As of now, this product has received outstanding feedback (over 3000 reviews). At the suggested price, you’re probably be left wondering what the catch is- and there really isn’t any strong one.

The only negative apple out of the bunch that we found useful was the fact that there are two seems that are barely noticeable running down the roller and when you roll out you can slightly feel it.

If you’re that much of stickler for detail you probably should choose another model but for most (nearly 3000) it went unnoticeable.

Verdict: If you’re looking for as much relief as you can without dipping too far into your wallet, this is a perfect choice for you.
