How to Stay Fit While Traveling- 5 Tips

Travel Workout- stay fit while traveling

Sharing is caring!

Traveling has a lot of perks, but dealing with an extra roll of fat when you get home sucks! When it comes to staying fit while traveling, it is hard to keep up with normal routines.

You often get too caught up in whatever business seminar or family event is going on to the point at which you lose control or even purposefully forget your fitness goals.

Remember that staying fit while traveling is not impossible. It’s all a matter of having a flexible workout routine and knowing how to diet.

That being said, here are 5 Great ideas to help you stay fit while traveling:

#1 Commit To Staying Fit While Traveling

A big problem with staying fit while traveling is that there is typically no preparation or real commitment before getting in the car.

Make a commitment to yourself before going on your trip that you will uphold your fitness standards. If you skip this step it will be that much easier to slack off.

If you struggle with commitments you make to yourself, tell someone close to you or a business partner “This is what I’m going to do, just to let you know.” This will give you more gratification when you do workout and eat correctly. And, let’s face it, no one likes failing a friend.  Especially if they check up on you.

#2 Do Research (Before you Get There)

One of the best things you can do is research the place to which you are traveling beforehand. Most people will not do this because of pure laziness.

Believe me, nothing beats being more informed about what is happening than your coworkers or fellow travelers. You never want to be caught off guard and shot around like a pinball in a pin machine not knowing north from south.

A quick 20 min search on Google can save you hours and hours of figuring things out and depending on the knowledge of a local bus rider who gives the most confusing directions, or a slow 2G internet connection.

People who do their research will be able to build a reliable plan to stay fit during their trip.

One of the things you can look for is a restaurant or grocery store that serves appropriate food.

Here is a Shortlist of Details that are Often Overlooked:

  • Itinerary (focus on how much “free time” you will have)Stay fit while traveling restaurant
  • Where a local gym is located or if there is one at your hotel (or dwelling place)
  • Cooking capabilities
  • Weather for the week (especially for outdoor activities)
  • Local grocery stores
  • Healthy foods are featured at restaurants
  • What local transportation is available?
  • Is it a safe area to run at _X_ hour of the day?

#3 Schedule and Calendar

Have you ever met a traveller who said: “I just figure it out as I go.”

Imagine saying that sentence and then complaining about how you’re out of shape. There are simply too many temptations that get in the way. The pillow. The burger or taco shop down the street. As the saying goes, “Those who fail to plan, plan to fail.”

In the last point, we talked about finding local info and having an itinerary. Once you have that, you can easily set up your own schedule.

Figure out what restaurants in the area match meet your dieting standards. Block out the ideal times for exercise.

Take into consideration how long it will take you to complete the workout and how much time you need to take a shower and get on with your travel activities.

Sometimes this strategy requires waking up an hour earlier or doing something you’re not used to, but remember that these are the little sacrifices that make a big difference.

#4 Pack Accordingly

If you don’t have the luxury of having a gym where you go, pack a quality jump-rope or resistance bands to bring the sweat on.

Also, Bring a gym bag, an extra pair of clothes to change into, etc. One of the easiest excuses is that “I can’t work out because I didn’t bring my __X__.”

Remember that there are always alternative workouts such as isometrics or squats that only require your body weight to be effective.

If you can Bring Food, Bring Real Food!

If you have the time/capability to make your own meals, do it!

Nothing beats knowing exactly what you are eating and exactly how it was made. Make sure to bring all the ingredients and cookware. You most likely won’t have time for an all-out steak dinner, but you also shouldn’t look for a quick “Hot Pocket solution.”

Download some simple/quick recipes for on the go. You know your fitness goals so nobody will know better than you what to make.

#5 Proper Workout Preparation

Make sure you have a good routine that fits your fitness level and one that is on-the-go compatible.

There are plenty of great flexible workout programs available through online programs or even free apps. If you know in advance, try the workout out a couple of times and become aware of the space and equipment needed to perform each exercise.

Customize certain exercises to fit your needs and capabilities. If you have medical restrictions, don’t go against your doctor or PT’s advice.

This will make it so much easier to do the workout because you’ll already have an idea of what it entails.
